4g. Transporting Carbon Dioxide

Once CO2 is captured, it must be prepared for transportation. The water vapor is removed and the purified CO2 is compressed at high temperatures and pressures into a supercritical fluid. A supercritical fluid has properties of both a liquid and a gas, which allows the CO2 to move easily through pipes while taking up less space. In most cases, the carbon dioxide is pumped through a pipeline to a storage site. North America has about 5,000 miles of carbon dioxide pipeline.
