2d. North Dakota Lignite Research Council’s Research & Development Program

In 1987, the North Dakota Lignite Research Council’s Research and Development Program was established to preserve and enhance the state’s lignite resources. Each year, about $7.5 million of funding is generated through taxes including the coal severance tax, coal conversion tax, and gas tax revenues. For every ton of mined coal, ten cents is put into the research and development program. In addition, the state boosts funding by investing six dollars from industry and other sources in lignite-related projects for every state dollar.
