Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a colorless gas with a sharp, irritating odor. It is produced by burning fossil fuels, including coal. Sulfur dioxide affects the respiratory system, particularly lung function, and can irritate the eyes. When sulfur dioxide combines with water and air, it forms sulfuric acid, which is the main component of acid rain. Acid rain can cause deforestation and acidify waterways to the detriment of aquatic life
A scrubber is a device added to the chimney of a coal-fired plant. As exhaust passes through the scrubber, pollutants are removed. Lime is used in the scrubbers to remove sulfur dioxide.
