Water management is the second step in the mining process. First, the company digs sediment ponds downstream from the mining site. The size and shape of the pond depends on the area’s topography and its contributing watershed. Some ponds have valves for discharging while others need pumps.
The company tests the water for pH levels, acid-generating material, suspended solids and hard metals like iron. The water analysis reports are then sent to the EPA. Once the water meets EPA standards, the company discharges it along with the mud that settles at the bottom of the pond.
