4d. Coal Analysis

A geological engineer analyzes coal cores in a lab based on customer needs. The coal’s quality makes it useful for different things. For example, steel mills need hotter-burning coal than power plants. The engineer does an analysis of coal for every mile. They look at qualities such as:

  • • Moisture
  • • Ash content
  • • Sulfur content
  • • Sodium trace minerals
  • • Other trace elements

The lab burns the coal to create mineral ash, which gives the engineer the mineral oxide content of the coal.
