What is Nuclear Energy?

Nuclear energy comes from splitting atoms in a reactor, releasing large amounts of thermal energy. The thermal energy is used to heat water into steam. The steam turns a turbine and generates electricity.

Advantages of Nuclear Energy

  • -Nuclear energy has no carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
  • -It can reliably meet high baseload, or electrical grid demands reliably.

Disadvantages of Nuclear Energy

  • -Nuclear energy creates radioactive waste.
  • -Managing the waste is difficult and building a nuclear energy plant comes with high capital costs and regulations.
