2f. Natural Gas

What is Natural Gas Energy?

Like coal, natural gas is a fossil fuel formed deep below the earth’s surface. In its natural state, it’s a gas. Natural gas must be cooled to -260º Fahrenheit to form a liquid before it can be used for electricity. Burning natural gas transforms chemical energy into electrical energy. Most natural gas plants use methane as a fuel source.

Advantages of Natural Gas

  • -Natural gas has fewer emissions than coal, and it’s low-cost.
  • -Natural gas uses a jet engine to create electricity, which makes it relatively easy to set up generators.
  • -The generators can be designed to increase or decrease production quickly.

Disadvantages of Natural Gas

  • -Natural gas is volatile in terms of costs and regulations.
  • -Lack of natural gas pipelines in certain areas can make it difficult to transport to power plants.
