Cost of Electricity

If you live in a house, you may have noticed an electrical meter like the one pictured. The meter is measuring the number of kilowatt-hours used by all the electronics in the house.

A kilowatt-hour is a measurement for how many kilowatts of electricity an appliance uses in an hour.

If you live in an apartment, meters for each apartment may be located in a utility room instead of outside.

Each month, the power company sends an electrical bill for the electricity used. Just like milk, eggs, and bread can cost different amounts in different cities, electricity can cost more or less depending on where you live. North Dakota has some of the nation’s most affordable electricity at about 10 cents per kilowatt-hour. Other states have much higher prices at 20 or even 30 cents per kilowatt-hour.
