Operative careers require less formal training than found in Craft Worker categories. On-the-job training is more prevalent as positions frequently do not require a college degree or specialized training. Pump operators work with stationary or portable pumps. They transfer liquids, gases, and powdered materials in and out of vessels and processes, perform inspections and maintenance on various machinery, and troubleshoot issues with systems and processes.

Heavy equipment operators perform routine inspection and maintenance on vehicles such as checking oil, water, and tires. They operate graders for leveling, and operate tractors to load materials, such as dirt and rocks. They also operate backhoe and front end loaders as required, and operate forklifts and dump trucks to transport trash and materials.
