Electrical Transmission Overview

Electricity is generated inside of power plants like the Antelope Valley coal fired plant by Beulah, North Dakota. One of the biggest challenges for power plants is that there’s no way to store electricity once it’s made. In a typical manufacturing plant, whether it produces cell phones, shoes, or school busses, the product can be stored in a warehouse before it is sent to the customer. Electricity must leave the plant as soon as it’s created. The electricity is carried through transmission lines and is sent out to customers through the electrical grid.

The electrical grid is a network of power plants, power lines, and substations. Together, these pieces connect the power plant to the customers who have purchased electricity. Click to the next screen to look more closely at the electrical grid.
