Underground Miners
In 1920, North Dakota had 12 surface mines and 104 underground mines. By 1930, surface mines surpassed the number of underground mines due to increased productivity and safety.
Williston Power Plant
The Williston power plant was able to produce large amounts of electricity because the mine was nearby. This eliminated the need for trains.
Knife River Station
The Knife River Coal Company opened a power station in Beulah, North Dakota, in 1922. The facility used a narrow-gauge railroad to transport coal from the mine.
