A colorless, pungent, gaseous compound of nitrogen and hydrogen (NH3), possessing strong alkaline properties when in solution. It is soluble in water to an unusual degree, one part of water absorbing 600 parts of the gas. It is used as a refrigeration gas because of the ease with which it is liquefied at moderately low temperatures by means of high pressure.
